The Moon

Besides the names “Trunator”, “Fastenbock” and “Maximilian, sei stark”, our dark doppelbock was also known as “Vollmondbock”, as it used to be brewed only during full moon. A round, yellow full moon therefore laughed from the “Fastenbock” label at the time. And again today, the moon is on the belly label of our dark Bock.

Monks and Keys

The particularly rich Bock beer was a popular food substitute for monks during Lent. However, the production of strong beer in the monasteries at that time had to be approved by the Pope himself (“Papa sanxit” – approved by the Pope). According to legend, this is why a barrel of strong beer was brought to the Vatican, which was vigorously shaken on its way over the Alps and strongly warmed by the Italian sun. Finally, the beer arrived sour and undrinkable to the pope, who compassionately allowed the monks the “ghoulish” drink. As an anecdote to this story, the keys from the coat of arms of the Vatican can also be seen among the monks.

Prince Elector Maximilian I.

In 1612, the Duke of Bavaria and later Elector of the Holy Roman Empire founded the “White Preyhaus” in Traunstein, which would later be renamed the “Hofbräuhaus Traunstein”. Today, we still brew our beer in the same place and use the same raw materials from the region and the water from the Traunstein Hochberg as we did over 400 years ago. The name is shared by our brewery founder and our current brewer Maximilian Sailer. That is why both the oldest and the youngest brew of the Hofbräuhaus Traunstein are namesakes for this special bock beer.

Dark Bock
“Maximilian”

An absolute pleasure beer that goes particularly well with hearty, spicy food. Bock beer was originally a typical beer for Lent: because the monks were not allowed to eat meals, they turned to these nourishing beers instead.

Its special character today is characterised by velvety, strong malt notes and complex aromas of chocolate, coffee and prune.

Since more valuable raw materials are needed to make this bock beer than for lighter beers, it has always been considered an expression of prosperity and enjoyment. Hofbräuhaus Traunstein has had this special beer in its range since the 1950s – among other things also under the name “Vollmondbock” (full moon bock), because in the old days it was only allowed to be brewed then. Today it forms the highlight of our annual strong beer festival in the historic hall of the Hofbräuhaus Traunstein.

Dark fiery colour, velvety smooth drink. An unforgettably intense taste of malty roast aromas, caramel and a hint of chocolate.

Original wort content 19.2 °

Alcohol content 7.8 %
